About Spiritualism
Spiritualism is not, as often believed, a sinister cult meeting in darkened rooms to "call up the dead" but an officially recognised religious movement with its own churches and Ministers, who possess the same rights and privileges as other religions. Spiritualism is in itself a religion, it embodies the main ideas of all religions that there is a life after death, an immortality and the existence of a God.
The difference between Spiritualism and other religions is the ability through mediumship to prove that man survives the grave. Mediums are highly sensitive people who have developed their natural psychic abilities to communicate with those who have passed over, thus providing conclusive evidence of continued existence in another world. Mediums cannot just call up these people - they come to us, but only when they are ready, willing and able so to do.
The philosophy of Spiritualism is based on seven fundamental principles. Spiritualists are not atheists or anti-Christian and our first principle recognises God as our Father. We do not regard him as a nebulous person sitting on a throne, but an Infinite Power embodied in all that is good and beautiful in our world, the greatest factor in the universe and the controlling force of all nature.
The Seven Principles
- The Fatherhood of God.
- The Brotherhood of Man.
- The Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels.
- The Continuous Existence of the Human Soul.
- Personal Responsibility.
- Compensation and Retribution Hereafter for all the Good and Evil Deeds done on Earth.
- Eternal Progress Open to every Human Soul.
The Seven Principles were communicated through the mediumship of Emma Hardinge Britten, receiving this inspired communication from Robert Owen in spirit (1771-1858) – a social reformer and founder of the Co-operative Society.
Emma Hardinge Britten (1823-1899) was an orator, a medium and a writer, a true pioneer of Spiritualism.
When the Spiritualists’ National Union was formed in 1901, linking Spiritualist Churches together, these principles – with minor changes, were adopted as the Articles of Agreement for the Religion of Spiritualism.
